Nikon z6 Firmware Update Step by Step

If you are new to the Nikon system, or even interchangeable lens cameras, you might be wondering how to update the firmware on the Nikon Z6 and Z7 when an update is released? In this short guide we will explain how.

Whichever camera you have, the process of updating the camera firmware is the same in both Nikon Z6 ad Z7.

Update Nikon Z6 and Z7 firmware

Your Nikon Z6 or Z7 camera firmware can be updated in just a few quick steps ...

Update Nikon Z6 and Z7 firmware

  1. First, visit the Nikon Download Center and find your camera's firmware page. If you are a Z6 user, click here. Nikon Z7 users can click here.
  2. On your camera page in the Download Center you will find tabs for Manual, Firmware and Software. Click on Firmware and then you will see a list of firmware versions.
  3. Find your firmware version in the list and click the View Download Page link. On the next page you will have two tabs for Windows and Mac OS. Click the tab for your operating system.
  4. At the bottom of the page you must accept the terms of the license agreement and then you can download the firmware file.
  5. Double-click the firmware file (this will be a .dmg file) to mount the disk image containing the folder called 'Z6Update'. This folder will contain your camera's new firmware, which will become a .bin file.
  6. Next you will need an XQD card reader and an XQD card formatted on your camera. Connect the card reader, insert the card and drag the .bin file to the top folder, or root, the XQD memory card.
  7. Remove the card from the card reader and insert it into your camera, then turn it on.
  8. Press the Menu button and navigate to the Camera Settings Menu on the left side of the screen then scroll down to the Firmware version. Press OK and the setup process will begin.
  9. Some on-screen instructions may require you to authorize certain things; just tap OK. The process will take several minutes.
  10. After the update is complete, turn off the camera and remove the memory card. You want to delete the firmware file from the card.
  11. Finally, turn the camera back on and again navigate to the Firmware version in the Settings menu only to confirm that you have fully updated to the new firmware version.
